Home Renovations

A house that leaks, sags, or shocks you isn't a home — it's a hazard with a mortgage. We fix it, at no cost to the family.

The problem

Deferred maintenance is the quietest housing crisis there is.

A U.S. veteran or first responder on a fixed disability income doesn't lose the house all at once. The roof goes first, then the ceiling, then the bedroom nobody sleeps in anymore. A retired paramedic with two fused vertebrae can't get on a ladder, and the estimate to hire it out is three months of income.

Nobody applies for assistance in the first year. They apply when the furnace dies in January, or when a code inspector leaves a notice on the door. By then the repair costs four times what it would have. Our renovation program exists to catch that curve — and to catch it for free.

What we cover

Safety and habitability first. Everything else after.

Roofing & envelope

Full and partial roof replacement, flashing, gutters, siding, window and door replacement, and water-intrusion repair.

Electrical & HVAC

Panel replacement, knob-and-tube and aluminum remediation, GFCI protection, furnace and heat-pump replacement, ductwork.

Plumbing

Structural

Foundation stabilization, joist and beam repair, subfloor replacement, porch and stair rebuild, ramp footings.

Health hazards

Mold remediation, asbestos and lead abatement by licensed contractors, radon mitigation, pest damage repair.

Safety & security

Egress windows, smoke and CO systems, handrails, exterior lighting, deadbolts, and grab-bar installation.

What we don't cover

Cosmetic-only remodels, additions that increase square footage for non-accessibility reasons, detached structures, pools and spas, and work on properties the applicant doesn't own or hold a long-term lease on. If your need falls outside our scope, we'll tell you on the intake call and refer you to a partner rather than leaving you in a queue.

The process

From first contact to final walkthrough.

Six steps, one point of contact.

  1. Apply or call. A ten-minute form or one phone call. Response within 10 working days.
  2. Intake conversation. A case manager learns the whole situation — not just the item you asked about — and confirms service verification.
  3. Home assessment. For renovation and accessibility work, a licensed contractor and a certified aging-in-place specialist (if necessary) walk the property with you.
  4. Scope and schedule. If approved, you get a written scope, a cost estimate we fund, and a real start date. If we can't do all of it, we say so and connect you to who can.
  5. Build. Permitted work goes to licensed trades. Trained volunteers may handle non-critical work as deemed appropriate.
  6. Walkthrough and follow-up.
    • Final walkthrough and warranty documents. You sign off, we photograph the work.
    • If you would like to share your story, we document the project and your thoughts.
    • Check-ins at 30 days, 6 months, and one year after completion.

A roof over someone's head is a literal job.
