Mission & Values

Who we are, what we are aiming at, and the standards we hold ourselves to when the work gets hard.

Mission

What we're here to do.

Connections for Heroes renovates, adapts, and provides homes for United States veterans, first responders, and their families — and stays connected to those households long after the work is done.

Vision

What we're aiming at.

An America where no one who answered the call is unhoused, unsafe at home, or locked out of a room in their own house — and where the community that benefited from their service is the one that fixes it.

Who we serve

The household, defined plainly.

Our programs are open to United States veterans of any era and any discharge characterization, to active and retired first responders — law enforcement, fire, EMS, dispatch, and search and rescue — and to the families and caregivers who live with them. Eligibility turns on the household's need and the safety of the home, not on rank, service dates, or how well someone tells their story.

Values

Six things without compromise

Dignity first

Dignity is the starting point. We treat each case with respect and compassion. We don’t photograph anyone without prior consent. And we always say “Welcome Home” at the completion of a project.

Finish the job

A half-renovated house is worse than an untouched one. We don't start work we can't fund to completion, and we don't leave a family managing our subcontractors.

Tell the truth about capacity

An early “no, but here’s who can” is better than a hopeful “maybe” that turns into a year of silence.

The household, not the hero

Every plan we write includes the caregiver and the kids, because the person who called us is rarely the person carrying the most.

Show the books

Audited financials, program ratios, and outcomes — including the unflattering ones — get published. Trust is the only real asset a housing charity has.

Stay connected

It's in our name for a reason. Thirty days, six months, one year. Every family, every time, whether or not anything is wrong.

Where we draw lines

What we will not do.

  • We don't endorse candidates, parties, or legislation. Housing a veteran or first responder isn’t a partisan act, and our service population spans every political belief there is.
  • We don't require a story in exchange for help. Assistance is never contingent on agreeing to be photographed, quoted, or put on a stage.
  • We don't start what we can't finish. If a project isn't funded to completion, it doesn't get a start date.
  • We don't display a rating or seal we haven't been awarded, and we don't publish a figure we can't tie to an audit.

Values are cheap until somebody funds them.
